Although the building is not quite 100 percent completed, Vernon ISD has announced there will be an open house for the new Vernon Elementary School from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday. There will also be an open house at Vernon High School during that same time frame for the new media center and other renovations that were done to the building.
“With this being Homecoming, we thought it was the perfect time to have the open house for the new elementary school. This will give Vernon residents a chance to see the new campus along with former Vernon ISD students who are coming in for Homecoming,” said Vernon ISD Asst. Superintendent Blaise Boswell.
“There are still some things that have to be done at the elementary campus, but by the end of the week most of what is not completed will be things outside the building,” Boswell added Tuesday morning.
Vernon ISD is requesting no food or drink be taken into the new elementary school or Vernon High School during the open house.
Voters approved a bond for a new elementary school and high school renovations in an election in November of 2021. Work began on the elementary school building in January of 2022. The goal was for the building to be ready for the start of this school year, however delays in getting construction materials derailed that goal.
Currently things are on track for second thru fifth graders to leave Central and Shive on Wednesday, Oct. 4, begin attending the new campus on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
