Job shadowing students

It was “Be A Grown-up Day” – otherwise known as “Job Shadowing Day” – yesterday for close to 40 Vernon High School seniors who had the opportunity to spend the morning observing what a normal day looks like in a variety of careers – from teacher to nurse to welder. The students are members of the VHS Career and Technical Education program.

After the students selected the profession they wanted to shadow, CTE instructors Elly Gonzales, Brooke Meinzer, Candace Adams LVN, Audrey Hastings, Kyle Myers and Justin Stone, contacted local businesses and organizations and made arrangements for the students to be paired with a professional to shadow. Wednesday morning each student was able to observe a professional in the occupation they are interested in pursuing go through a normal morning on the job.

While some of those professions involved staying inside in an office, others involved being out in the elements and traveling to different work sites. When the students gathered to talk about their morning, all them reported they learned a lot about their possible career choice while shadowing their professional.

The students told the instructors being able to shadow someone helped them see things they liked about their possible career choice, as well as some of the not so good things. All them said it was a great experience, and were glad they had the opportunity to shadow someone in the workplace.

Vernon High School, along with Vernon ISD, would like to thank all of our local businesses and organizations for taking part in our “Job Shadowing Day” and allowing our students a first-hand look at what a routine “day on the job” in their chosen occupational field looks like.
