Day 1 of the District 7-3A Track & Field Meet saw eight Lions and Lady Lions qualify for the Area Track & Field Meet, and 12 make it to the finals of the running events, which will start at 5 p.m., today, at Hawk Stadium in Iowa Park. The top four qualifiers in each event move on to the Area Track & Field Meet.

Two Lady Lions and two Lions captured event titles in the field events on Wednesday, which was almost a perfect day weather-wise for a track meet. Vernon double-dipped in two events, winning the boy’s and girl’s title for both Triple Jump and High Jump.

Key’Maria McBride captured first in the Girls Triple Jump with a leap of 36-feet, 2.75-inches, while Jamari Chance won the Boys Triple Jump with a personal-best distance of 43-5.75. In the Girls High Jump Breasha Waggoner won when she cleared a personal-best 5-4, and Tevan Evans cleared 6-6 to grab first in the Boys High Jump. Clearing that height places Evans on the Texas Top 50 list.

The lone silver medal belonged to Nadia Gaines, who finished second in Girls Shot Put with a personal-best throw of 35-7.25.

Picking up third place medals were: Klancy Sherrill, who cleared 5-0 in the Girls High Jump; Adarius Williams, who jumped a personal-best 21-4 in the Boys Long Jump; and McBride, who had a jump of 16-2.5 in the Girls Long Jump.

Israel Espinoza had the only fourth-place finish for VHS, and it came in the Boys Pole Vault when he cleared 11-0, a personal best.

Also placing in the Top 6 and winning points for their team were: Lily Beam, fifth in the Girls Long Jump with a jump of 15-6.5; Adrain Felton, sixth Boys Shot Put with a throw of 42-2.5; and Tayten Jasinski, sixth in the Boys 3200 Meter Run.

Going into today’s running finals, Jacksboro is in the lead in the Boys’ Team Standings with 77 points, while Vernon is second with 43 points and Holliday is third with 42 points. The Girls’ Team Standings shows Iowa Park in the lead with 46 points, followed by Holliday with 43 points, Jacksboro with 37 points, and Vernon with 33 points.
