The VHS Government class recently went on two field trips. The first field trip took the class to view Doans Crossing to learn about early government in Wilbarger County and finished up with a tour of Red River Valley Museum. We were fortunate enough to have the former Mayor of Vernon, Jeff Bearden, and curator Cooper Alexander (VHS alum) take us through both sites.
On our next tour, we were given a court lesson with Judge Cornell Curtis on how the court system works. Judge Curtis fielded all sorts of questions by students.
Many thanks to our professionals of Wilbarger County giving back to our seniors!

Over the past couple of weeks, we have had to delay school and cancel a few times due to the weather. Today, we looked into how much time we have lost and how much time we are able to lose before we have to make up any time. At this time, we do NOT have to make up any of the time we have lost. This means that Friday, March 10, will still be a day off for everyone unless we end up with more closures/delays at a later date. Have a great weekend!
Just a reminder that there will be no school on Monday, February 6, for all students due to a staff professional development day.
🏀Basketball Games Rescheduled🏀
Our district basketball games against City View will be played on Saturday, starting with varsity girls at 12:00. This is the earliest time we could secure officials to Vernon on Saturday. We know this date may present some conflicts and we are sorry for any convenience this may cause. Please come out on Saturday and support our students!
We will have school today with our 2 hour delayed start plans in place. Buses will also run 2 hours late. Although wet, the roads are fine, and temperatures are expected to rise as we move through the day.
📢 WE'RE HIRING!! 📢
Vernon ISD is hiring a Public Relations Officer for our district! You can go to bit.ly/ApplyVISD and search for the Public Relations Officer posting. There is an attachment with a detailed job description for this new position. If you are interested, please apply online. We can't wait to work with you!
The VMS basketball games scheduled for tomorrow in Henrietta are cancelled due to the weather.
We currently have moisture on the ground in Vernon and it is expected to continue throughout the night with temperatures expected to hover just above the freezing line overnight. We have decided to be cautious and have a 2 hour delayed start tomorrow, Thursday, February 2. Buses will run 2 hours late as well.
🏋️♀️POWERLIFTING MEET CANCELLED🏋️♀️
The girls powerlifting meet on Thursday in Petrolia has been cancelled.
Vernon Community:
Vernon ISD will move to close all campuses today, February 1. The threat of precipitation has been enhanced overnight with now a greater than 50% chance of precipitation existing at several times during the day. Stay warm and safe!
Please join us in congratulating the following senior football players, and one very hard working trainer, on being selected to the THSCA Academic All-State Football Team. These student athletes excel both in the classroom and on the field. Way to represent the Lions!

Vernon Community:
Vernon schools will opt for another 2-hour delay tomorrow, February 1. Buses will run 2 hours late. The rationale behind the decision is we see a current forecast for rain/sleet/snow falling at 10:00a.m. when the temperature will rest at 27 degrees. A 2-hour delay does not help at all in a situation like this but it will help in giving the team and I the time needed to see if things change one way or another.
My hat’s off to this staff, who have dealt with quite a few adjustments this week yet are so committed to the mission to teach that they rise and show up even during adverse weather.
