Our Vernon Lady Lions went 3-1 in pool play Thursday at the BUFLS Tournament in Nocona and will be in the Gold Bracket for Saturday's bracket play. Their first match will begin at 8 a.m., Saturday. In Pool Play, Vernon defeated Newcastle 29-27, 25-10; City View, 25-10, 25-16, and Northside 25-22, 25-17. The Lady Lions fell to Windthorst, 25-18, 25-18.
Leading the way for the Lady Lions were Mari Johnson with 20 kills, 4 ace serves, 3 blocks and 6 digs; Key'Maria McBride with 18 kills, 7 ace serves, 2 blocks, 13 digs and 10 assists; and Klancy Sherrill with 15 kills, 4 ace serves, 6 digs and 6 assists.
Yesterday Mrs. Allison Stanley's Chemistry classes had their first lab of the school year. The students learned how to light a Bunsen Burner, along with the correct technique on how to measure the mass of different objects and how to filter sand from water.
Remember -- tomorrow is an early release Friday for Vernon ISD. Students get a jump start on their three-day weekend!!

Vernon ISD students and staff have a 3-day weekend coming up, as school will be out Monday, Sept. 2 for Labor Day. Classes will resume on Tuesday.
Starting next week our VES students will have the opportunity to purchase ice cream for a $1. We will have ice cream every week. 2nd & 3rd graders will be able to get an ice cream treat every Wednesday, while ice dream day for our 4th & 5th graders will be Thursday. Remember -- ice cream treats start Sept. 4.

After being postponed due to inclement weather in April, the 2nd Annual VISD Lions Roar Golf Tournament was held Friday at the Hillcrest Country Club. There was some scores as hot as the temperatures, with the team of Bryson Henry, Jeff Case, Jon Whitsitt and Tate Methvin claiming first place with a score of 55, 16-under par. Right behind them after shooting a 58 was the foursome of Nick Hutchins, Reba Hutchins, Kathy McClellan and Tom Boyd. Three teams shot 63 and tied for third and fourth place. After a card playoff, the team of Jim Parmer, Sandie Parmer, Ed Marsh and Danny Woodard finished third, with Charlie Boren, Mary Sue Gunn, George Pattison and Bowie Franks taking fourth. Vernon ISD would like to thank the sponsors for the golf tournament and all who participated in supporting Lions Roar!
The Lions faced the Holliday Eagles Thursday night in their final scrimmage before kicking off the 2024 season Aug. 30 in Burkburnett. After each team's first and second team offense and defense squared off for a set number of plays with coaches on the field, the Lions and Eagles played a quarter in game-like conditions. Holliday scored twice in that period, while the Lions were scoreless, although they had one TD called back due to a penalty.
Get those running/walking shoes on for the VMS Lion's Roar 1K/5K Color Run/Walk that is set for Tuesday, Sept. 17. Registration fee -- which includes a t-shirt -- is $20 for students and $35 for adults. Registration deadline is Thursday, Aug. 29.

Due to the excessive heat, VES feels the need to shortened the time our students spend outside. We will shorten recess and PE time to 15 minutes if the outside temperature is between 100-109 degrees. If the temperature reaches 110 degrees, recess and PE will be held in the gym.
Vernon ISD cares about our students' health -- both mental and physical. Students learn better when they're healthy both mentally and physically.
