Today started Vernon High School's 10 School Days of Christmas countdown. Today's theme was "Here Comes Santa..." and students definitely got into the spirit of the day.
Members of our VMS Student Council recently took a turn ringing the bells for the Salvation Army Red Kettle at United Supermarket. The annual Red Kettle Campaign is the Salvation Army's largest fundraiser of the year. All the donations stay here with Vernon's chapter of the Salvation Army.

Friday evening Vernon ISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward and Vernon High School Principal Dr. Cynthia Jackson manned the Salvation Army Red Kettle at Walmart. Thursday evening our McCord 1st graders presented their annual Christmas Program. A great crowd was on hand to enjoy the student's performance There were plenty of cheers and smiles all around.
Receiving our VES Teacher of the Month honor for November is 3rd grade teacher Kirsten Civitarese and receiving our VES Staff Member of the Month honor is Jovita Fernandez. Congratulations to these ladies!! They always do an outstanding job and go above and beyond for their students.
Members of the VES Student Council went shopping yesterday, selecting gifts for the stars they selected from the Vernon Jaycees' Star Tree, which helps ensure children in need in the community receive something on Christmas morning. The Student Council raised the funds for the shopping spree in November with their annual "Turkey Bowl." VES students donated $3,100 during the fundraiser and the Student Council used that money to purchase gifts for 15 stars from the Star Tree.
Our first grade Gifted & Talented students worked on robotics and computer coding earlier this week.
All of our VES students have been practicing hard over the last several weeks and are ready to perform their Christmas Programs!! The 4th & 5th Grade Program will be Monday, Dec. 9, while the 2nd & 3rd Grade Program will be Tuesday, Dec. 10. Programs will start at 6:30 p.m., both nights, at the Wilbarger Auditorium.

DON'T FORGET!!! Our McCord 1st Grade Christmas Program is tonight at the Wilbarger Auditorium. It starts at 6:30 p.m. Our kindergarten and first grade students do one program a year. Our first grade students present a Christmas Program, while our kindergarten students present a program on what they learned in kindergarten in the Spring.
Several students and families received some great tips on how to complete their FAFSA application last night at the Panhandle-Plains Higher Education Foundation FAFSA workshop. A thank you to them for helping our students, and also a big thank you to Jeanne Ballard and Ashley Whitley from Vernon College for coming to assist our students.
This fall Vernon ISD started a new program at Vernon Elementary involving fourth grade students. The district provided free swimming lessons to fourth graders who attended after-school tutorials. The goal was to provide students with the opportunity to learn the fun and life-saving skill of swimming, as well as help the students improve in the classroom. Students in Mrs. Stanley's chemistry classes are studying metal ions and completed a lab project yesterday. When different compounds are heated, the metal ions give off different colored flames. In their project, students heated compounds and were able to determine what metals were in each compound based on the color of the flame. They heated 9 different compounds, which showed all the colors of the rainbow.
We had quite a few students make the trip to Wichita Falls yesterday to participate in the District 7-3A Elementary School UIL Literary Meet that was held at City View Elementary. All of the students did a great job! A story including the results of the meet will be posted early next week. We are very proud of all of our students who took part in the literary meet. They did a great job of representing VES.
A large contingent of our VMS students participated in the District 7-3A Junior High UIL Literary Meet yesterday at the City View Middle School. Our students did great!! We had one of the largest groups of students participating and we finished third in the team standings!! We will post a story that includes all of the results early next week. Congratulations to all!! Great job!! We are SO proud of YOU!!
