This afternoon Angela Morrison, a retired first grade teacher, visited McCord and read the Easter story "Country Bunny and the Golden Shoe" to all of the first grade classes. She also provided each student with a 'surprise' Easter egg. Thank you Mrs. Morrison for continuing to be involved with our students and our school!

Remember today's Blood Drive sponsored by the VHS CNA/MA program. The blood drive is being held in the PE Gym and will continue until 2:30 p.m. At noon, they were 25 donors away from reaching their goal of collecting 40 units. The Our Blood Institute (formerly Texas Blood Institute) is running the blood drive and all the donations go to hospitals in our immediate area.

As a part of your school's health services, a spinal screening is being held tomorrow at VES. Per State of Texas requirements, only 5th grade girls will be screened Tuesday. Students are required to remove their shirt for this exam. For this reason, we request all girls wear a swimsuit top or sports bra underneath their shirt tomorrow. Students are screened by a school nurse with a partition in place for their privacy. Students will not be required or asked to remove their shirt in front of other students. If your child shows any sign of spinal defect at the screening, the information will be relayed to you in writing. It is hoped you will consult your physician for diagnoses and follow-up care as recommended.

Four Vernon ISD school campuses -- McCord, Central, Vernon Elementary and Middle School -- are designated as public storm shelters. The storm shelters are opened when we receive word from the county. Schools are not opened to the public during school hours. No animals will be allowed in the shelters. We are unable to use Shive at this time due to the building no longer having water.

A representative with the American Heart Association visited our Vernon Elementary campus Thursday to tell our students about this year's Kids Heart Challenge (formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart). Each student received a packet to take home with instructions on how to register and how they will be able to learn about their heart and "slime" a teacher by raising money for the American Heart Association.

Today we wrapped up the first week back from our Spring Break, and all the students, teachers and staff are focused on finishing the 2023-24 school year strong. And, so is VISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward, as he stated in his latest article, "...A perfect example of this mindset is the fact that the current spring focus is indeed on finishing the current year strong, but is also on setting ourselves up well for next year. The key to strong schools and school districts in today’s public education world is assembling a world-class staff and maintaining those teachers..."
