This morning Vernon Mayor Pam Goslin spoke to our 2nd and 3rd grade students and explained what her duties were as mayor, and talked a little about how city government works.
The Vernon Lions' district for volleyball and basketball remained the same. It should also remain the same for baseball and softball, however those realignments will be released later.
The Vernon Lions will be heading east instead of west in their new District 4-3A, Division 1 Football district.
Don't forget, the District 4-5A Wrestling Tournament begins today at 11 a.m., at D.O. Fulton Gym and will continue Friday at 10 a.m. Check out the t-shirt that is available to purchase to find out the teams that will be competing.
Just a quick reminder that Friday is our first early-release Friday of the Spring Semester.
The UIL is scheduled to release it's biennial classification and district realignment at 9 a.m., tomorrow. As soon as we get the information, VISD will post the district and district opponents the Lions will be facing in 2024-25 and 2025-26. One post will have the football district, while a second post will be VISD's new district for most of our other sports programs.

A slow start cost the Lions Tuesday night as they fell to the No. 20-ranked City View Mustangs, 72-60, in a District 7-3A contest. Vernon rallied and was within 6 points early in the third quarter, but the Mustangs regrouped and regained control of the game. Vernon is now 6-3 in district play, while the Mustangs improve to 6-2. The teams split their two district games. The Lions are open Friday night and return to action next Tuesday when they host Bowie.
Our Lady Lions ran into a roadblock Tuesday night at the City View Gym, as the Lady Mustangs picked up a 53-43 victory that snapped Vernon's 5-game winning streak. The Lady Lions are now 6-5 in District 7-3A and remain in sole possession of third place. City View is 9-1 and in first place. The Lady Lions are open Friday night, and wrap up the regular season at home next Tuesday against Bowie.

Today, Brett White's Government classes went on a field trip and learned about the penal system. The students started at the auditorium where they heard from the Wilbarger County Jail administrator, Sheriff Brian Fritz, and they heard about a day in the life of an inmate from a jail prisoner. They also learned about equipment the sheriff department uses. The students moved on from the auditorium to the county jail, where they received a tour of the facility.
Mr. White wanted to thank Sheriff Brian Fritz, Renee Weaver, the Wilbarger County Jail and the Vernon Police Department for speaking to the Government classes about the penal system, and life as an inmate, as well as giving the students a "hands on" experience. It was truly an experience.

In just four short months the 2023-24 school year will be over and pre-k youngsters in our community will be heading off to kindergarten. There are certain skills youngsters should know as they move into kindergarten. Along with teachers going over these skills in pre-k, our hope is that parents will work on these skills with their children at home. The goal of sharing this information is to help better prepare our future Lions for kindergarten!
