Lions Head Baseball Coach Austin Thompson announced this afternoon the VHS Baseball Alumni Game scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, had been cancelled. Coach Thompson said after last week's rain and snow they had been working on the field, but were unable to get the field in playable condition. Due to the regular season starting Monday, the alumni game will not be able to be rescheduled. Coach Thompson said the alumni who had signed up to play will be recognized at a game later this season.
We have quite a few Lady Lion powerlifters who will be competing at the regional meet. Here's a link for options to purchase a regional t-shirt in support of our Lady Lions. Over 20 residents interested in hearing more about the new child care facility that will be opening later this spring attended an informational meeting Thursday night at the Vernon Elementary School Cafeteria. The new facility is a collaboration between Vernon ISD and Child Care Partners. VISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward and Child Care Partners Executive Director Keri Lemon Goins provided information about the new facility, which will located on the South side of the Central Elementary building. The VHS sophomores -- the Class of 2026 -- will have a class meeting on Monday. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m., in the VHS Cafeteria. All sophomores should make plans to attend the meeting.
Progress continues at the new child care facility opening later this spring. Vernon ISD and Child Care Partners are working together to open the facility, which will offer child care for infants 6 weeks old to pre-kindergarten youngsters. A public meeting to provide information about the facility is being held at 6 p.m., tonight, at the Vernon Elementary School Cafeteria. Officials from VISD and Child Care Partners will be on hand to talk about the facility and answer questions.
A send-off was held this morning for VHS wrestler Shyne Rodriguez, who will be competing at the State Wrestling Tournament this weekend in Houston. A senior, Shyne finished 4th at the Region 1 Tournament in the 215-pound weight class to advance to State. GOOD LUCK SHYNE!!!
VHS senior Kell Castleberry had plenty of supporters Tuesday afternoon at his letter of intent signing ceremony. Kell signed to attend Dallas Baptist University on a tennis scholarship. After trailing by 20 points going into the 4th quarter here Tuesday night at D.O. Fulton Gym, our Lions put on a furious rally but they came up just short, falling to Iowa Park, 70-64, in the District 7-3A finale. Vernon will be advancing to the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year and will be going in as the No. 3 seed from the district. The victory gave the Hawks the No. 4 seed.
The Lions will be taking on Peaster in the bi-district round of the playoffs. That game will be played at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, in Olney.
Our Lady Lions saw their season come to an end last night in Anson, as they fell to the Comanche Maidens, 72-48, in a Girls Class 3A Bi-District playoff game. The Lady Lions made the playoffs for the first time since 2021, and have 7 of 8 varsity lettermen returning. Vernon finishes the season with a record of 18-16. The lone senior playing her final game on the court for the Lady Lions was Cirstin Ivy.
This morning VHS juniors took part in an ACT Boot Camp to help prepare them to take the ACT. Vernon ISD covered the fee for all juniors to attend the ACT Boot Camp. By attending an ACT Boot Camp, students can raise their ACT scores up to 30 percent, and a higher ACT score can bring more scholarships, which can make it easier for students to attend college.
VHS students have elected their nominees for Valentine King & Queen. The Valentine King & Queen will be crowned at 8:40 p.m., Friday, at the Valentine's Dance. Queen nominees are Karrissa Mejia, Jairy Vazquez, Marli Limon, Jaylie Freeman, McKenzie Belcher, Layla Trinidad, Kaylee Delaune, Rufaro Mubvumba and Ariel Croxton. King nominees are Ja'Qwan Arthur, Zac Centeno, Case Fleming, Cross Durham, T.J. Thomas, Kale Sherrill, Kell Castleberry and Greg Newton.
It's off to the playoffs for our Lady Lions, as they travel to Anson tonight for a Class 3A Bi-District showdown with the Comanche Maidens. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. Vernon is the visiting team.
