Our Lady Lions begin the second round of District 7-3A volleyball action this evening as they travel to Holliday to face the Lady Eagles. The sub-varsity matches will begin at 5 p.m., with the varsity match set to get underway at 6 p.m. GOOD LUCK LADY LIONS!!!
Our Lions tennis team hits the playoff road today, traveling to Plainview for their Class 4A Team Tennis Bi-District Playoff match with Hereford. GOOD LUCK!!! Brand the Hereford Whitefaces!!! The winner of the Vernon-Hereford bi-district match will meet the winner of the Decatur-Lamesa bi-district match in the area round of the playoffs.
The VHS Fall Festival is TOMORROW!!!! Stop by the VMS Gym and enjoy some great games, snacks and a spoooooky haunted house!!! The VMS Fall Festival Queen & King will also be crowned during the event.
Our VES 5th grade students are working hard this week in Social Studies as they wrap up their unit on the American Revolution. The students are working as journalists covering the Revolutionary War and bringing the latest news to the residents of the colonies.
Earning awards for their play in the Lions' thrilling 38-35 district victory over Ponder last Friday night were:
Offensive MVP -- QB Ty Scott who completed 7-of-9 passes for 200 yards and 2 TDs, and also picked up 151 yards rushing on 15 carries with 2 scores
Defensive MVP -- LB Tyce Payne who collected 11.5 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss, recovered a fumble and returned it 38 yards for defensive touchdown
Special Teams MVP -- K Mu Soe who drilled a 33-yard field goal with 8 seconds left for the game-winning points. He also went 5-of-5 on PATs and made 3 big tackles on special teams
Ball Hawk -- DE Bowie Eakin who had 8 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss and 2 sacks, and recovered a fumble
Big Stick -- S Carter Kieschnick who had 7 tackles and forced a fumble
Lion Heart -- DE Landon Bynum who had 5 tackles, including 1 sack, and forced a fumble.

Students in Ms. TiSierra White's 3rd grade class are currently working on writing letters in class. Recently a class parent provided donuts for all of the students in the class. As part of the lesson, and to show their appreciation, all the students wrote the parent thank you letters for providing the tasty treat.

The VHS first 6 weeks incentive trip was today, and 151 students took a trip downtown to watch "The Wild Robot" at the Vernon Theater. That's 31 percent of our high school students which is outstanding!! The trip included the movie, a drink and popcorn.
Today's Lion Pride Pep Rally theme is "Moonwalk Across the (Ponder) Lions" and it was Michael Jackson Day throughout VISD. There were some great MJs walking around the halls of VHS today!!
Our Lions are back home at Leo Brittain Field tonight for a District 4-3A, Div. 1 showdown with the Ponder Lions. Vernon comes into the game with a district record of 0-1, while Ponder is 1-0. Today representatives from the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium gave presentations on Vaping Prevention to Vernon Middle School and Vernon High School students.
It was "Books and Burgers" today as McCord invited parents to eat a burger with their child during lunch and then browse the books available at the school's Book Fair. The book fair has been at the school since Monday and will wrap up tomorrow. Money raised from the book fair goes toward prizes students receive when they reach a reading goal.
Each month during the school year VHS selects two Students of the Month from each grade level, with the overall Student of the Month selected from those 8 students. VHS also award Teacher and Staff of the Month honors. Honored as September Students of the Month were: Freshmen -- Georgia Balderas & Sylus Belcher; Sophomores -- Myka Lopez & Damien Perez; Juniors -- Kyndell Horn & Peter Din; and Seniors -- Carolina Horn & Adarius Williams. The Overall Student of the Month was Adarius Williams. Staff of the Month was Gayla DeHoyos. Not pictured is September Teacher of the Month Allison Stanley, who is currently on maternity leave. Congratulations to all!!
